Wordy Wenesday: Sundials

The Sun's apparent motion from east to west across the sky causes objects on Earth to cast shadows. The changing position of the shadow cast by an object during the day indicates a change in time. The sundial is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, known device for the measurement of time. It is made of an object called a gnomon, ( Greek for "the one that knows") which casts a shadow on a scaled surface. The shadow of the gnomon falls on different points on the scale, telling you what time it is.

The scale of a sundial is designed so that the differences in the direction of shadows during the day indicate time. In the morning, shadows are long and point toward the west. As the day progresses, shadows shorten. At noon, when the Sun is at its highest point in the sky, shadows are shortest. In the afternoon, shadows are longer again and in the opposite direction, toward the east.

Open Exposure

Today I played around with the exposure on the camera. I headed down to the pond and set up my tripod. I used my 15-85 mm lens and three lens filters for this shot. I opened up the exposure for a few seconds. The ripples in the pond took on a misty look. For the picture below I actually took two different shots, one exposing for the sky and one exposing for the water. Paul edited them together. Love this look and will be experimenting more in the future.

For an excellent example of water with open exposure check out my brother's website.

Picture of the Day: Carrot Cake

Yesterday we had seven people over for dinner. I made Lasagna for the main course and Carrot Cake for dessert. This was my first attempt at making the cake and I followed a recipe off Simply Recipes . I spread a cream cheese frosting on it and sprinkle toasted coconut and chopped walnuts over top. So good!

Happy Friday!!

Wordy Wednesday: Psalm 19

(photo by Joe Segreti)

PSALM 19
1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.
3 They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
5 It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
6 It rises at one end of the heavens
and makes its circuit to the other;
nothing is deprived of its warmth.

7 The law of the LORD is perfect,
refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
8 The precepts of the LORD are right,
giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the LORD are radiant,
giving light to the eyes.
9 The fear of the LORD is pure,
enduring forever.
The decrees of the LORD are firm,
and all of them are righteous.

10 They are more precious than gold,
than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,
than honey from the honeycomb.
11 By them your servant is warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
12 But who can discern their own errors?
Forgive my hidden faults.
13 Keep your servant also from willful sins;
may they not rule over me.
Then I will be blameless,
innocent of great transgression.

14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
be pleasing in your sight,
LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Rathbun Lake, Iowa

Last week I googled our area and zoomed in on the biggest body of water near us. It was Lake Rathbun in Iowa. We are close to the border of the states so it was only an hour and half drive. We packed a lunch and headed out Saturday morning to check it out.

Rathbun Lake

Gotta have the chips and Twizzlers!

We past through a number of small towns including this one....

Paul was stoked to see all the water!

Alone

Anyone that knows me realizes that I need alone time. When I was still living at home I would jump in my little Geo Metro and cruise the back Virginia roads for hours. I loved that time so much.

Now living in Missouri, married and gas prices through the roof I need to get my "alone time" in a different way. Camera in hand I head out in the flat fields of the country side and walk around for a few hours enjoying the outdoors and occasionally grabbing a few pictures.

The following shots I got during one such time... just some random things I came across.
